Caterpillars in the Vege Garden

Like aphids, caterpillars of moths and some species of butterflies also have a wide range of hosts and have spread widely in NZ.

Some of the most common caterpillars in NZ are the green looper and the tomato fruitworm. They are common on a wide range of plant hosts both vegetables and common garden plants such as Zinnias, Roses, Chrysanthemums, apples amongst others. Both cause holes in leaves and fruit.

There is a range of conrol methods like companions plantings of plants (Marigolds) which act as a Natural irritant to the butterflies so help to keep them away from your garden. Other companion plants work by attracting the natural predators of the caterpillars like the small Lace Wing Wasp. Orchardists do quite alot of companion planting as part of their Integrated Pest Control Programs and so reducing the use of pestcide sprays in the orchard.

Your local garden centre will have a number of suggestions on what is safe and effective in your area. Observe the with holding periods with the spray which is the time between spraying and when you can next pick any produce from your garden.

Warm soapy water may help to remove the cateripillars from the plants. Use 1 ml of household dish washing liquid (Sunlight Soap for example) per 1 litre of water and apply to the plants as a wet spray. This means apply until the water starts to run off the leaves. Do not spray in the middle of a hot sunny day so mid afternoon or on a cloudy but dry day is ideal. Or just squash them with your finger.
