A few thoughts on Plant Propagation. How simple is it?
Well, both simple and complex. With some daisies you can just stick a cutting in the garden soil and they will grow roots while some mature trees are very difficult to propagate and only master craftsmen in the nursery trade can successfully propagate a plant.
Why?
Three simple reasons.
One, it is fun and very satisfying creating your own plants and watching the wonder of nature at work.
Two, it is economic. It will save you money due to not having to buy the plants from the local garden center.
Three, it means you get a new plant with exactly the same genetic heritage as the parent so if a plant is about to die of old age or accident then asexual propagation of the plant by cuttings is a wonderful remedy.
The only consideration with cuttings is to check if the plant has Plant Protection Rights on it, like copying software off a music CD, it is illegal propagating some new breeds of plants is also illegal and frowned on.
What is a suitable container to hold cutting material before planting?
Wet newspaper, tissue paper or a hessian sack are all great containers to hold your cuttings. A clear plastic bag is not good as the light will enter the bag and cause the temperature to rise in the bag placing stress on your new plant material.
When is a good time to collect cuttings?
Basically it depends on the weather. If it is a hot summers day then take them in the early morning while the plant material is good and hard due to being full if water from the previous night. As the sun rises and the leaf temperature rises due to the sun rays striking the leaves, the plant response is to transpire water through the leaf stomata. This process of evaporation cools the leaves down.
If it is a autumn /spring day and say possibly cooler and cloudy then you can be more flexible when you take the cuttings as the level of stress on the plant tissue will be reduced due to the lower air temperatures and likely higher humidity.
