Hardy landscaping plants.The following is a list of ornamental plants which might be suitable for landscaping around the greenhouse and property. Those selected are hardy species which will withstand most weather types. Most are frost hardy in New Zealand conditions but you should check their suitability for your locality.
General trees and shrubs
- Agapanthus Peter Pan (sterile) or Streamline,
Two recent varieties, both semi dwarf with violet-blue flowers
- Berberis thunbergii Rose Glow
Dwarf shrub with slender arching branches, new shoots are bright purple, new leaves rose-pink, deciduous , 1m
- Brachyglottis Sunshine:
A hardy native shrub with hairy silver foliage, yellow daisy like flowers. 1.5m x 1.5cm
- Callistemon viminalis Little John
Evergreen dwarf bottle brush, masses of deep red flowers, 1m x 75cm,
- Carex species comans, testacea or flagellifera
Native New Zealand tussock grass with fine leaves about 30cm long, hardy and good for mass plantings.
- Ceanothus Blue Carpet
Blue flowers on glossy green foliage, spreading ground cover, 1.5m x 75cm.
- Choisyia Ternata (Mock Orange Blossom)
White scented flowers, resembles orange blossom late winter through spring, evergreen, 1.5m x 1.5m
- Cistus Sunset
Compact shrub, with deep rose flowers, evergreen, 75cm x 75cm
- Coleonema pulchrum Sunset Gold
Low spreading shrub with yellow foliage and small pink flowers in spring.
- Cuphea Robs Mauve, White Whispers or Hyssopifolia
Hardy low perennial bush, evergreen with colourful flowers, 40cm x 40cm
- Hebes
Native New Zealand shrubs which flower with purple - white blooms. Suitable low growing varieties include Hebe Inspiration, Lavender Spray, Wiri Mist, Wiri Dawn, Albicans.
- Nandina domestica pygmaea Firepower
Dwarf bamboo type plant with bright red-gold foliage, compact.
- Raphiolepis umbellatum
A hardy low growing shrub, thick dark green leaves, white flowers.
- Sophora Dragons Gold
Dwarf cultivar, New Zealand native, which grows easily, yellow flowers winter to summer. 1m
- Teucrium fruiticans
Silver grey foliage & blue flowers, evergreen 1.5m x 1.5m
Ground covers
- Brachycome multifida Break of Day
A quick growing hardy perennial, mauve flowers for most of year, good border plant. Frost tender.
- Coprosma sp.
New Zealand native, prostrate varieties best for flat borders) ie, Taiko, Te Puna, Hawera, x kirkii prostrata
- Gardenia jasminoides radicans
Compact shrub, dark green foliage with aromatic white flowers
- Hedera canariensis
Heart shaped leaves, good as hardy ground cover, quick growing
- Ipomoea mauritanicus
A quick growing ground cover, full sun, violet flowers, good for banks.
- Juniperus procumbens Nana
Spreading low conifer with grey foliage, 20cm x 1m
- Libertia perigrans
A hardy grass type plant with sword like leaves, arranged in fans usually orange brown
- Rosmarinus lavandulaceus
Low creeping shrub with blue flowers
- Trachelopsprum jasminoides
A very hardy low growing climber-ground cover with dark green foliage and white flowers.
Hedging
- Camellias
Suitable hedging camellias are the sasanquas such as Cotton Candy, Jennifer Susan, Exquisite and Setsugekka and Yuletide
- Corokias
New Zealand native shrubs upto 2m tall, very hardy and dense
Lophomyrtus x ralphii Kathryn, Gloriosa or Krinkly
New Zealand native shrubs upto 2m with krinkly small leaves , either variegated or purple-brown leaves/
- Olearia Albida var. angulata or Olearia paniculata
Small New Zealand native trees upto 3m, thick dark green leaves with wavy edges, very hardy
- Pittosporum tenuifolium
Small New Zealand native trees upto 2.5 -3m , some suitable hedging varieties include P. eugenoides, P. tenuifolium Deborah, James Stirling, Katie, Limelight, Mountain Green, Silver Sheen, Variegatum
Photinia x fraseri Red Robin
Evergreen 2.5m x 1.5m New foliage has a deep red for long periods of time.(Can harbour thrips)
